OnePlus Z said to launch in July as cheapest OnePlus smartphone: Expected specs, features and price

The recent OnePlus 8 series by the handset maker has also been launched in the premium price category

With OnePlus recently revealing that it was working to go back to its roots, the company is likely to release its cheapest smartphone -- the OnePlus Z as soon as on July 10. Initially identified as OnePlus 8 Lite, the device would essentially compete with popular budget smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo among others. There have been several leaks about the upcoming device and they suggest the smartphone would be priced around Rs 25,000.

It is pertinent to note that since its debut, OnePlus has strayed far from its original USP -- low pricing of its handsets and last month the company CEO Pete Lau said that OnePlus was looking to get back to making affordable handsets while foraying into new product categories.

According to recent reports, the OnePlus Z or the OnePlus 8 Lite would be priced in the country at Rs 24,990 and may be unveiled in 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and 8GB RAM variant too. The premium handset maker has already announced that it would host a launch event on July 2 where it would unveil two TV models.

Earlier in May, without giving details about the new products, the Shenzhen, China-headquartered company mentioned that the new affordable product would launch in India -- its biggest market, followed by other markets that include North America and Europe. Lau, who was was quoted as saying by Fast Company in an interview, the affordable new products will live up to the OnePlus standards.

The recent OnePlus 8 series by the handset maker has also been launched in the premium price category: The smaller OnePlus 8 has been launched at a starting price of Rs 41,999 (6GB+128GB) while the 8GB+128GB model is available for Rs 44,999. The top-of-the-line 12GB+256GB model has been launched for Rs 49,999. The OnePlus 8 Pro price in India starts at Rs 54,999 for the 12GB+256GB model while the 12GB+256GB model comes at Rs 59,999.

With the passing years, OnePlus has strayed far from its original USP -- the pricing of its handsets. But, now, it is looking to go back to its roots. However, its bet to make a mark in the premium segment was not a failure. OnePlus dominated the premium smartphone market in India in 2019 by outpacing both Apple and Samsung with a 33 per cent market share, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research.

To recall, the first phone from OnePlus was launched for Rs 21,999 in the country that was significantly cheaper than the then flagship phones by Samsung and Apple. The Galaxy S5 was unveiled at Rs 51,500 and the Apple iPhone 6 was available at a starting price of Rs 53,500. Being called the "flagship killer", the price of OnePlus devices have since then, ticked higher.
